Great Big Bands of the Swing-Era
(you may never have heard of!)

The golden age of the Big Band era, from about 1935-1949, was unique in that it was the music listened to by all generations in the 1930's and 40's, young and old alike.  Big Band swing was the popular and dominate music of the era, not only for radio, but the movies, in nightclubs, at high school and college dances and parties, and at the local ballroom.

In the 1940's, it is estimated that there were over 400 big bands (some were known as "regional" or "territory" bands), criss-crossing the country, many playing night after night of one night stands, looking for that elusive "break".

Some great songs by some big bands of the swing era that you may never have heard of:

Mills Blue Rhythm Band:  "There's Rhythm in Harlem"; (which has elements of the then-unwritten "In the Mood"); "Yes! Yes!".

Willie Bryant and His Orchestra:  "Rigamarole"; "Long Gone From Bowling Green".

Lucky Millinder and His Orchestra:  "Mason Flyer"; "Little John's Special".

Edgar Hayes Orchestra:  "In the Mood" (Hayes' original recording of this song swings a lot harder than Glenn Miller's more commercially oriented cover.); "Swingin' in the Promised Land".

  Teddy Powell Orchestra:  "Jamaica Jam".

Buddy Johnson & His Orchestra:  "Walk 'Em"; "Shufflin' & Rollin'".

Will Bradley Orchestra:  "Scrub Me Mama with a Boogie Beat".

Harlan Leonard & His Rockin' Rockets:  "Hairy Joe Jump"; "Skee"; "Too Much".

Erskine Hawkins Orchestra:  "Swingin' in Harlem".

Earl Hines Orchestra:  "Scoops Carry Mary".

 Horace Henderson Orchestra:  "Sultan Serenade".

Clyde McCoy Orchestra:  "Music Goes ‘Round and ‘Round".

Tiny Bradshaw Orchestra:  "Ding Dong Daddy From Dumas".

Teddy Wilson Orchestra:  "Spreadin’ Rhythm Around".

Blanche Calloway Orchestra:  "I Gotta Swing".

Eddie Heywood Orchestra:  "Begin the Beguine".

Glen Gray and His Casa Loma Orchestra:  "Casa Loma Stomp"; "Zig Zag"; "Stompin' Around".
